Concrete pool decks in Summerville — cool, sloped and built on backfill that will settle
The ground around a new pool is backfill, and backfill settles. A pool deck here has to be reinforced for that, sloped to the drains, jointed at the coping, finished to stay cool through 72 days over 90 degrees, and inspected with the pool permit.
A pool deck has the hardest job of any slab in the yard. It's poured on the backfill around the shell, which settles for years; it carries wet feet, so it has to be non-slip; it bakes in a sun that puts Summerville over 90 degrees 72 days a year, so it has to stay cool; and it's tied to a structure — the pool — that doesn't move the way the slab does, so it needs an expansion joint at the coping or it cracks there every time. We build pool decks with the backfill compacted in lifts, welded wire or rebar on chairs through the whole slab, a slope of a quarter inch per foot toward the deck drains and away from the pool, a bond-breaker and expansion joint at the coping, control joints cut the same day, and a finish chosen for bare feet: a light broom, a cool-deck knockdown texture, exposed aggregate, or a stamped pattern in a lighter integral color that reflects the heat.
The pool itself is a permitted structure — in-ground pools need a building permit in the Town and the counties, with inspections — and the deck is inspected with it, so the Town's pool-barrier and setback rules shape where the deck goes and how far it runs toward the fence. The deck also counts toward lot coverage like any paving; on a quarter-acre lot with a house and a driveway, a pool and a full deck can exceed 30 percent, and we check that before the pool contractor's drawing goes to the Town. For an older deck that's sound but stained, hot or slick, a resurfacing overlay — knockdown or cool-deck — restores it for a third of replacement; for one that's cracked at the coping and sunk at the corners, foam lifting plus repair or a new pour, and we'll tell you honestly which.
What's included
Reinforced for backfill
Backfill compacted in lifts, wire or rebar through the whole slab, so the corners don't drop as the ground settles.
Sloped to the drains
A quarter inch per foot away from the pool to the deck drains; no puddles at the ladder.
Joint at the coping
Bond-breaker and expansion joint between the slab and the pool structure, where every unjointed deck cracks.
Cool, non-slip finish
Light broom, cool-deck knockdown, exposed aggregate or stamped in a light color.
Permit and coverage
Inspected with the pool permit; counted against lot coverage before the drawing goes in.
Resurfacing option
Knockdown and cool-deck overlays for sound older decks; leveling and repair for sunk ones.

Questions we get about pool decks
Why does every pool deck crack at the coping?
Because the pool doesn't move and the deck does. Without a bond-breaker and an expansion joint between them, the slab is locked to the shell and cracks there as the backfill settles. We always joint it.
How do I keep it cool enough to walk on?
Lighter colors and a textured finish: a cool-deck knockdown or a light broom reflects more and holds less heat than a smooth dark surface. Stamped decks in pale sand tones work; charcoal doesn't.
Can you resurface instead of replace?
If the deck is sound — no major cracks, no sunk sections — yes, a knockdown or cool-deck overlay at a third of the price. If it's cracked at the coping and dropped at the corners, no overlay will hold; it's leveling and repair or a new pour.
Does the deck need its own permit?
It's inspected as part of the pool permit, and the Town's barrier and setback rules apply. It also counts toward lot coverage, which we check before the pool contractor's drawing is submitted.
How long after the pool is backfilled can you pour?
The sooner the backfill is compacted properly, the sooner. We compact it in lifts ourselves rather than waiting a season for it to settle, and we reinforce for what settling remains.
