Concrete in Ridgeville and Givhans — acreage, shops and the Volvo corridor
Western Dorchester County is where the acreage is: long driveways, shop and barn slabs, generator pads for the outages, and the growth that followed Volvo's plant and Walmart's distribution center to Ridgeville. Debby closed I-26 here in 2024.
Ridgeville and Givhans are the rural west end of the county along Highway 78, Highway 27 and the Edisto — farm and timber country that started changing when Volvo Cars opened its $1.2 billion plant at Ridgeville in June 2018 and Walmart opened a three-million-square-foot import distribution center there in April 2022. Now there are new subdivisions on the old fields alongside the acreage lots, and both kinds of property need concrete: the acreage lots want long driveways, aprons on county or SCDOT roads with culverts over the ditches, shop and barn slabs, equipment pads and standby-generator pads for the outages; the subdivisions want the standard driveway, patio and pad work. The ground changes going west — the county's soil survey runs from three feet of elevation at the Ashley to about 120 feet near Reevesville — with the Jedburg-Daleville-Izagora and Mouzon-Brookman-Wahee associations' clays and silts under much of it, and the Edisto River at Givhans Ferry cresting at 17.21 feet in August 2024, its third-highest ever. Debby also closed I-26 at mile marker 189 near Ridgeville and damaged the lanes.
Our Ridgeville and Givhans work is the acreage version of the job: driveways by the hundred feet, with the apron permitted through Dorchester County or SCDOT (US 78 and SC 27 are state routes) and a properly sized culvert; six-inch reinforced shop and barn slabs with turned-down edges and anchor bolts, on compacted stone over the clay; equipment and generator pads leveled to template; and the subdivision work on the new tracts, where the builder's driveway is already the same thin slab we replace in town. The drive out is longer; the price per yard is the same.

Questions from Ridgeville & Givhans homeowners
Do you pour long gravel-to-concrete driveways?
Yes — a 300-foot driveway is a Ridgeville job. We price it by the foot with the base and the apron, and we'll tell you honestly where a concrete apron and gravel run makes more sense than concrete the whole way.
Whose permit for an apron on Highway 78?
SCDOT's — US 78 and SC 27 are state routes, so the free state encroachment permit through EPPS, with the state's radius, grade and side-slope standards. County roads are Dorchester County's, also free.
How thick for a shop slab with a lift?
Six inches reinforced, with a thickened pad under the lift posts to the manufacturer's spec, on compacted stone. We set the anchor bolts to the template.
Is the ground different out here?
Yes — more clay and silt in the Jedburg and Mouzon associations than the sand ridge in town. Footings go below the active zone and slabs get a thicker stone base.
